Intercultural Perspective Politeness And Cultural Differences - 275 Words

Intercultural Perspective: Politeness And Cultural Differences (Essay Sample) Content: Intercultural Perspective Discuss how politeness varies across cultures, focusing on 2-3 cultures of your choice. Illustrate your discussion with examples Contents TOC \o "1-3" \h \z \u Introduction PAGEREF _Toc510878671 \h 3Politeness and Cultural Differences PAGEREF _Toc510878672 \h 3American Culture PAGEREF _Toc510878673 \h 4British Culture PAGEREF _Toc510878674 \h 5Chinese Culture PAGEREF _Toc510878675 \h 6Conclusion PAGEREF _Toc510878676 \h 7References PAGEREF _Toc510878677 \h 8 Introduction Being polite is a gentle gesture of being considerate of other people, cultures, places or anything that is relevant to someone else. It is an attempt to make sure that you are considering any situation from the perspective of other people and not doing anything that falls into the category of being rude to other people or hurts their feelings in any way. It is a sociological requirement for all people to be polite towards others since it fulfils the conditions of being a healthy and constructive social participant CITATION Hua08 \l 1033 (Huang, 2008). Additionally, being polite to others provides people with an opportunity to get connected to others and develop a healthy bond. When it comes to polite behaviour, these tendencies can vary on a cultural basis. Something that is polite in one culture might be impolite in others, leading to cultural diversity and differences. With more and more international travels and countries connecting with each other through globalisation, the nec essity of being mindful of other cultures became more crucial CITATION Nai18 \l 1033 (Naiditch, Liontas, DelliCarpini, 2018). This paper will analyse the various concepts of politeness across three dominant cultures, e.g. American, British and Chinese. Some fundamental discrepancies in the ideas of politeness will be considered in detail, and the last section will provide concluding remarks. Politeness and Cultural Differences Alred (2013) argued that cultures across nations can differ on a smaller to a broader extent. With the rise of globalisation, there have been efforts and real-time changes occurring in cultural integration of the world. However, there are some core concepts that are still different across countries. It has been argued that the politeness principles for each country vary to some extent no matter how close these countries are. The idea of politeness is popular among the sociological domain where cultures and their concepts of politeness across cultures are studies. It has been observed that by the level of differences between two cultures, the ideas surrounding politeness also vary from a small to a broader scale. It is possible that something is highly desirable in one culture while in another, it is a highly controversial matter. With that into account, it is interesting to see how these differences in politeness take place in a social context and tend to change the behaviours of peo ple CITATION Bre131 \l 1033 (Bredella, 2013). Regarding cultural differences and politeness, many things can lead to these alterations ranging from how people talk and approach others, what kind of faces they make when they talk to others, how their body language aligns with what they are trying to do and how the behaviour varies person to person. In a broader perspective, it is mentioned that it is about being mindful of oneself and the society around you and making sure that the risk of conflict and offensive behaviour is minimised. One thing that should be kept into account is that the differences between cultures and politeness do not only vary culture to culture and might be affected because of the geographical distance between two locations. For instance, there are instances when something considered in one part of the same culture is considered rude in another. It usually applies to the rural and urban areas when in a rural part of a country, something is considered polite while in the urban locality of the same culture, it can give an entirely different impression CITATION Byr10 \l 1033 (Byram, 2010). American Culture For this analysis, three cultures are considered including the American, Chinese and British, and their concept of politeness regarding communication are analysed. American culture is considered to be one of the most candid cultures in the world. Haugh Chang (2015) argued that the way people communicate with one another and use various verbal and non-verbal signs to convey a message to another person is classified as freestyle and comfortable. Since America is the most diverse country in the world with a good number of people migrated from other cultures (70% white and the rest of 30% from other locations), there is a high level of adaptability seen in the country which makes it more exciting to be analysed. Regarding languages, there is no official language in the country because of a large number of people is from other cultures. However, English is used as a primary medium of exchange, and the majority of people communicate in English CITATION Anu10 \l 1033 (Anundale, 2010). There is no particular class-based system in the US, and by law, all citizens are treated equally with a high penalty for acts of discrimination. The ways of communication are very straightforward in the US, and something that might be impolite in many countries can be considered very reasonable over there. For instance, something that makes the communication culture of the US is the name conventions. In many cultures, certain family members are called with specific names or terms that are specifically for these people. However, that is not the case in the US and everyone especially friends, family members and colleagues are called by their first names. It applies to people of the same age group and older people as well. Calling people by their nicknames is also common in the culture, and it is entirely okay to tangle up someone’s name if you are close enough CITATION Cha102 \l 1033 (Chang Haugh, 2010). Eslami (2015) mentioned that for a meet and greet, people can introduce others by their full name no matter how much age difference they have and taking someone’s name is always considered polite. For example, even students in the country would call their teachers by their names with a salutation in front of it while in another country, it might be considered rude whichapplies to other formal settings. There are lesser boundaries regarding personal space in the US. For example, it is normal for people to give high five to other, shake hands and even hug if they know each other and this applies to opposite genders as well. However, the strictly respect others’ personal space and are not very physical in general as that is considered impolite if you do not know the other person very well CITATION God12 \l 1033 (Goddard, 2012). They, however, are tended to ask direct questions to other people, and it is a typical gesture in their culture while the other person has complet e choice to answer or not. British Culture British culture is different compared to the American one, and many factors are responsible for this discrepancy in behavioural tendencies. Addressing someone in the UK is different than what it is in America or China and mostly, first introductions are gender-based, e.g. Mr and Mrs Jane Doe, etc. It applies to a formal setting as well when there is always a salutation in front of the name while in America, just the first name might be used no matter the gender or the occupation of the person. Regarding calling people in terms of their family relationships, America and the UK are somewhat similar while China is different CITATION Lee131 \l 1033 (Leech, 2013). In England, everyone older in the family is called uncle or aunt, same as the US while in China, specific relations have specific names assigned to them. For example, the master is ‘shi fu’, ‘da bo’ is the eldest brother of the father, ‘er jie’ is the second elder sister while third elder brother is called ‘san ge’. British culture does not have that much categories, and usually, there are uniform salutations for a large number of people CITATION Yin09 \l 1033 (Yin, 2009). It is stated by CITATION Hin091 \l 1033 (Hinkel, 2009), meeting with someone for the first time is very formal in the UK, and people make sure to be verbally polite to others. Phrases like good morning, good evening, thank you, sorry, see you soon and good luck are very common in standard conversion. British people are also used to complementing people in front of others while the person at the receiving end accepts the compliment with thank you CITATION Hau06 \l 1033 (Haugh M. , 2006). Additionally, gender differences are not very prevalent in the UK as they are in China. A man can compliment a woman on her look if they know each other while in China, it might be considered as a taboo and can be regarded as flirting and impolite. This is something that the UK has in common with the US where compliments to the opposite genders are not considered as offensive CITATION Bro162 \l 1033 (Brown Lensinvon, 2016). Chinese Culture The linguistic approach of China is different from many other countries in the world. With a significant difference in languages, traditions and cultures, the way Chinese people communicate with each other is different compared to how they talk about American or British culture. In the Chinese culture and communication, the concepts of modesty, warmth, and refinement are given much significance compared to other nations. People are always considerate of other’s feelings whenever they say something and asking questions is a very refrained practice since people want to ensure that they follow the rules of politeness, personal space and hospitality. One of the very basic communicational rules in China is the connection between the levels of education and politeness. As opposed to the American culture, in China, it is consid...

How Language Is Essential For Human Communication Essay

Language is essential to human communication because of the definition and signification of words, formation of complex clauses with these phrases, and ultimately, the sharing of ideas. Locke and Augustine present conflicting points of view on the argument of language’s purpose and, thus, pose contrasting answers to the questions: what is language and what is its meaning? While, Locke expresses a strictly internalist view on language and the individuality of words’ significance, Augustine represents the hybrid theory of referentialism and internalism, more accurately explaining the inner acquisition of language and its importance in the exchange of ideas. In Locke’s Essay Concerning Known Understanding, he discusses the importance of internally forming one’s unique signification of a word and the two ultimate purposes of language. Locke introduces his internalist views on language with a lengthy definition of internalism and a brief explanation of the usag e of this mode of thinking. He believes that â€Å"There is no natural connection between particular sounds and particular ideas†¦ and the ideas they stand for are their proper and immediate signification† (Locke, Essay Concerning Known Understanding, 146). Out of the Darkness free essay sample

With beaming lights shining down upon me, the echo of hushed voices seemed deafening, but the loudest rang within me. My own jittery, panicked voice echoed slowly and clearly inside my mind: Just breathe. Ever since I was young music has resonated with me. For a â€Å"tough cookie,† or so I was described, I didn’t feel emotions easily. My friends would be blubbering messes in their movie theater seats beside me, while I watched with dry eyes wondering why I wasn’t wailing with them. It dawned on me later that it wasn’t that the emotions weren’t there, but instead it took something different to bring them out of me. It seems cliche to think something as small as a song could start a revolution within someone, but for me that’s exactly what happens. When listening to a song the first thing I pay attention to is the lyrics. We will write a custom essay sample on Out of the Darkness or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I analyze what they mean, detect their worth to the singer, and within moments I’m hooked. My father told me that I could remember the lyrics to any song after one listen, even the ones I hadn’t heard in years. He said my ears were always open. Even if I wasn’t talking, I was listening. I didn’t know I could actually sing until eighth grade. After being told constantly as a child that my singing was ear-splitting, I didn’t have the confidence to try. I limited myself to sing-alongs in the car and hymns at church. But as I aged, my singing voice developed and become quite pleasant. I didn’t think anything of it until my cousin invited me to her own show. I had known she was an amazing singer, but when I witnessed her sing live something clicked within me. I realized that was something I wanted to do too. Watching her sing, the band playing perfectly in time, I was moved. I felt my mood lift, joy bubbling inside of me. I wanted to use my voice to bring light to people. I knew music could make me feel sadness, anger, happiness or hope; now I wanted to be the one to incite emotions in others. Once freshman year started I decided it was my time to take a leap. My mother signed me up for the same music lessons my cousin took, which offered performance opportunities with a band. My singing teacher looked an aged rock and roll singer, complete with a fiery personality that was instantly unforgettable. My first few songs were rocky messes as I lost my breath often. After the first go around, she shared some advice, â€Å"Don’t be nervous. People think everyone judges them for their art, but half the people out there could never do it themselves. So just breathe.† Flash forward a few months later. My teacher told me I was ready to sign up for a show. I scribbled my name under the singing section of the pop music show and began rehearsing. In three months, showtime was upon us. I was prepared as could be, but just before the curtains opened my calm facade crumbled. I was anxious and afraid. I had never performed live before. My mind raced. What if I mess up? What will they say? The confidence I had been building quivered within me. This was truly my leap into darkness. With beaming lights shining down upon me, the echo of hushed voices seemed deafening, but the loudest rang within me. My own jittery, panicked voice echoed slowly and clearly inside my mind: Just breathe. And from the darkness I emerged.

What surprised you most about the Mesopotamia civilization essays

What surprised you most about the Mesopotamia civilization essays How to explain that working in group could have caused a civilization to become more advanced? Well the civilization in question for centuries, even millennia the Mesopotamian culture has been considered one of the first civilizations. But, the question has risen, is their proof that Mesopotamia was a civilization? Do we have concrete evidence to support the fact? Well, we have to analyze the culture point by point. Did it have organized government and religion? Did it have an actual writing system? Was its social class organized? Did it have diversified labor? Ok, lets take it from the top. Writing and division of labor, two of the basic necessities of any civilized place in the world. Mesopotamia was considered a civilization because it had writing and division of labor. Proof? First off, many tablets have been found with thousands of wedge shaped marks, which after much study have been deemed as cuneiform, the basic writing system of the Mesopotamians. But if we actually think ab out it, Mesopotamia or the land between the rivers is thought by many to be the birthplace of what we know today as civilized life. The fact alone that the Mesopotamians were able to survive in the unforgiving land between the rivers says much about the strength and adaptability of this civilization and then they were also the first civilization that used arithmetic to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. But based on this definition can one say that is was a truly great civilization? The answer is yes, the many scientific, political and social advances brought about by the people of Mesopotamia overshadow any reservations one might have about calling Mesopotamia a great civilization. ...

E-Commerce Systems Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

E-Commerce Systems - Essay Example E-commerce is not only limited to the exchange of goods or services, it involves a broad range of activities in different departments such as design, finance, promotion, distribution etc (OECD 2001). This has become one of the most popular and productive sources for business transactions (Kerner 2005). Companies invest great deal of their resources to have an appealing presence on the internet to attract consumers towards their products and services. There are two main classifications on the basis of which strategies are formulated to promote and market the products and services of the respective company- business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C). These classifications are made on the basis of the type of target market that is chosen by the business owner; the buying-end can either be a business itself (B2B) or an individual consumer who has certain requirements (B2C). B2B sales are targeted for a limited segment of customers whereas B2C sales are aimed for the whole set of consumer market (YourDictionary.com n.d.). The competition in the markets is more than ever and is still increasing. This has arisen as a result of the consumer’s access to global products and services rather than being restricted to local ones. E-business makes access to global products even more convenient. Companies are required to possess an attractive presence on the World Wide Web since otherwise they will loose the race for greater market shares and revenues. The following are some of the incentives that are gained by B2C websites: The dynamic nature of the web facilitates frequent promotions by companies regarding their products and services and these marketing strategies cost much lesser than the conventional modes of promotion and marketing. The internet user generally browses the website himself. The marketing messages can be reached to him on a personal level. There may exist enhanced responsiveness in the medium of the

Criminal justice comprehensive exam Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Criminal justice comprehensive exam - Essay Example The perpetrators of such crimes have been known to create and distribute viruses that have been known to disrupt a company's daily operations. Cybercrimes vary in their nature; there are those criminals who use the internet to accomplish other traditional crimes like drug trafficking while there are those who utilize this technology to carry out the technological crimes like bank fraud and identity theft (Ponemon Institute, 2012). Compare your findings above in (a) to previous years. In 2011, the average cost of cybercrime was estimated at $8.4 million which represented a 6 percent increase in cost from a previous study (Ponemon Institute, 2012). The number of attacks also increased by 42 percent from 72 successful attacks per week to 102 successful attacks per week (Ponemon Institute, 2012). The Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) reported that there was a decrease in data breech in 2011 (n=419). It was also reported that this decline came after there had been an increase in 2006 (n=662) of breeches which characterized a wide range of cybercrimes (Finklea & Theorhary, 2013). Apply a criminological theory (just one!) to describe why this particular crime problem exists to the extent that it does, The psychoanalytical theory of crime was developed by Sigmund Freud to explain some of the causes of crime in the world. In his theory, the human personality has three psychic structures commonly referred to as the identity, the ego and the super ego (Toch, 1979). Through the identity, one seeks to pursue instant needs without any thoughts or analysis. Through the ego, one seeks to pursue needs that are influenced by their educational status and socialization processes. The super ego on the other hand results from all lessons that individuals have learned from their parents. Therefore, crime will often result when a person's identity surpasses their super ego resulting in actions that are only fueled by apparent need without further thought of their consequences. The refore, the hacker will perform the classical psychological crime because of their apparent need for social rewards in the form of fame or money. They do so without paying attention to the obvious consequences like punishment by the law. The structures of education and family lessons have failed to take root in this person's identity because they are still driven by material needs. It is because of this that programs to prevent hacking are developed that focus on administration of computer ethics education at the early stages of life of a child (Ponemon Institute, 2012). According to the theory in (c), explain the changes in the pattern of the crime from previous years compared to today There has been a significant increase in the costs that have been incurred in cybercrime in 2011. This can be attributed to the policy that was introduced to enhance cyber space security. This was the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace: Enhancing Online Choice, Efficiency, Securit y, and Privacy that was released in April 2011 (Finklea & Theorhary, 2013). this policy was meant to create an identity ecosystem whereby individuals were to authenticate their on-line identities and the identities of their digital devices. Through the establishment of these laws, hackers perceived a challenge presented by the President and sought to connect with their identities (Sigmund Freud's theory). Hence in order to seek fame and powers that had been denied by the enactment of this policy, hackers increased

Scarlet Letter :: essays research papers

Symbolism is traditionally a sign or token of something. In the matter of literature, the definition of the literary device, symbolism, is more complicated. Symbols of literature are usually metaphysical. The main symbol of The Scarlet Letter is the red "A" that Hester Prynne was sentenced to wear on her chest. Nathaniel Hawthorne's intention was to make the meaning of the crimson token worn on the bosom of Hester Prynne is highly ambiguous. In this he was successful. Although the "A" means "adulteress" to the people of Boston, to reader the "A" may have other meanings such as "American" or "able". To the townspeople, author, and reader clearly the original intention of the "A" was to stand for "adulteress". When Hester Prynne became pregnant during the absence of her husband she was accused and convicted of adultery. Her sentence was to wear a scarlet letter "A" on her bosom to let everyone know that she was an adulteress, forevermore. Because of her unique sentence everyone knew that she was, in fact, an adulteress and people treated her that way. Society condemned her for her sin, without knowing anything else. Hester was forced to live alone on the outskirts of the city. She was a seamstress, but got very little business. When she used her skills to decorate the "A", things only got worse. People felt that she was trying to show off the fact that she was an adulteress, or that she was proud to be. Hester's daughter, Pearl, was constantly ridiculed by other children for being an "evil", "devil" child. Clearly it was the first intention of the symbol to reve! al that Hester Prynne was an adulteress. Although the first intention of the "A" was to mark Hester Prynne as an adulteress, it also has other, more abstract meanings. The letter has a relation to the word, "American". Hester Prynne's "A" reflects an "American" meaning in various ways. For one, America is a melting pot of many peoples and ideas, as was Hester's "A". She earned that "A" under certain situations. She was in a loveless marriage. She had been separated from her husband for 2 years. She thought he might be at the bottom of the sea. She was in love with another man. She was perceived and punished under a strict Puritan eye. Like the development of America, the were many conditions that led to the developed of Hester's "A". Another way that Hester Prynne's "A" symbolizes America, is that they were both shaped by past actions. No matter how Hester had changed, since her act of adultery, at any point

Darkest Child

In the novel The Darkest Child the author Delores Phillips displays the activities and likely hood of growing up in the still racist Deep South. The main character Tangy Mae encounters hardships and tribulations amongst her family. Her mother Rozelle Quinn displays negative habits of a mother by being over controlling of her kids. Rozelle often beat and called her children names out of frustration and rage. Tangy Mae and her siblings must step up to the plate in order for the family to make a living without a father figure while dealing with their scolding mother. In the story the Darkest Child the mother Rozelle Quinn is a thirty – five year old tall slender lady with dark grey eyes and so fair-skinned that she can pass for white is the mother of ten children including Tangy Mae who all lived in fear of her moods and temper. Rozelle favors her light-skinned kids, but insists that they all love and obey her unquestioningly. Tangy Mae is her smartest and darkest colored child, a nd her mother treated her different because of that.Tangy Mae went to school longer than all of her other siblings and wanted to continue but her mother wouldn’t allow her to because she wanted her to work like the rest of her siblings. Her mother would often beat her and her other siblings an example from the book is â€Å"The belt looped through the air in a rush, but instead of striking Martha Jean it cut into my shoulders, neck, and back. It knocked me off balance. †(Phillips 119) Her mother would always tell her things like she was ugly. She would talk to her kids anyway she would like and always threatened them to get her point across for example â€Å"Effortlessly, Mama wrapped her other arm around Martha Jean’s neck and breathed into her ear, dumb bitch. You no-good, dumb bitch. I’ll break yo’ goddam neck. †(Phillips 118) But somehow through all the stressful situations Tangy somehow still managed to keep her head up and stay strong t hrough it all. Their mother had a mental illness she would â€Å"Satan’s in here, she said in a hollow voice, her gaze darting about the room. While I was gone, one of yall let satan in my house. Who was it? No one spoke. Don’t sit there like idiots. I wanna know who did it. †(Phillips 69-70) This shows that Tangy Mae’s mother suffers from an mental illness. Tangy Mae and her siblings have been through it all from racism to being baldly mistreated by their mother. Their mother wanted to be in control of their whole life and if her kids ever went against something she said and didn’t obey her rules she would brutally hit them and call them all types of names.
